LISTEN UP… This week is just a fun selection of songs, it also appears I have been hit with a bout of nostalgia today. Tomorrow is June 1, so real summer is just around the corner. Is it hot where you are? There were some arms out today in Edinburgh- not mine. Other people, other arms.
Have a fun-filled weekend, we are taking it easy! Nothing on the agenda for the moment and we are trying hard to keep it this way.
Spotify users, you can listen to the mix here! My father-in-law has joined the fun!
LISTEN UP… The tunes coming to you this week are my interpretation of the mix we heard during our recent experience at the Roller Derby. The star is worn on the helmet of the jammer, the skater who scores. Edinburgh has several teams and we saw the Auld Reekie Roller Girls. It was such a fabulous atmosphere. I took pictures which I will be posting soon- promise.
What are your plans for the weekend? We have friends coming tomorrow, Sarah and Tom, friends from Ben’s MBA year. I am a plus one for a wedding- my friend Toni is taking me. England has a Bank Holiday, we do not have the day off here in Scotland.
Wishing all my American friends and family a Happy Memorial Day!
Enjoy the long weekend!
Listen to the mix here if you have spotifiy.
LISTEN UP… This week it is brought to you by our two years in Scotland. I was so surprised when I compiled this list on some of the singers and groups who were Scottish.
Sheena Easton- she dated Minnesota-native Prince! The Talking Heads, how could a classic American movie like the breakfast club end with a non U.S.A based groups song. What is your biggest surprise?
Have a great weekend- we are doing something new and exciting and I will post about it next week- promise.
Listen along on Spotify here.
LISTEN UP… This week we are celebrating MOM! Mine, yours, you if you have littles- whosever it is- they are most likely amazing. The lady singers on this week’s list are all mothers -some better than others (did you catch what mom of four Madonna wore to the Met Gala this week-cringe!) My mom favoured the long-sweeping broom skirts-phew. None of these women are as fabulous as my own mother, except maybe Beyonce.
It should be noted I have a pretty cool mother-in-law as well, but the U.K. celebrates Mother’s Day in March, so Sue has already had her day!
Some interesting facts about the ladies on the list Kate McGarrigle claims Rufus Wainright as a son. Vanessa Paradis has two children with just-turned-50 Johnny Depp, sadly they are no longer together.
The song Don’t Cut Your Hair is an inside joke between my mom and I and I will be forever haunted by my senior picture!
Have a fabulous weekend and remember to enjoy your mother!
Listen to the mix on Spotify, here!
LISTEN UP… Family and friends are gathering in Granville, Ohio this weekend to celebrate Ainsley’s first birthday. She requested a brunch, a true sign she is a Gorrilla/Smyth. She invited us, but unfortunately we decided not to fly in and steal her birthday thunder, instead I made her this celebratory mix. There is also a package in the (almost) post, don’t get too excited A.O! Her real first birthday is May 11, so there might be a part two to this mix since I was limited by the size of the cake.
A.O., have a great brunch- sorry we cannot be there to celebrate with you.
Listen up on Spotify here.
LISTEN UP… Inspired our recent Neil Diamond tribute concert- here is a mix of several other well known artists who have covered versions of original Neil Diamond song. There certainly are some obscure singers on this list. I tracked all the songs down on a fun site called Second Hand Songs, SHS catalogs your favourite artists’ original songs which have been recorded or performed by others.
As you might be able to guess, the most covered Neil songs are Sweet Caroline (even Roy Orbison performed this one) and Song Sung Blue (this version by Bobby Darrin is especially peppy)! With 31 recorded covers each.
Unfortunately some of the versions I thought would be excellent additions to this week’s Listen Up are not available on Spotify- imagine Shirley Bassey singing Love on the Rocks orWaylon Jennings’ rendition of Kentucky Woman. How about a sing off between Harry Belafonte and Josh Groban as the battle for best cover of Play Me!
Hope you enjoy- if you are on Spotify, listen up here!
NOTE: The last song is not a cover, it is a duet with Neil and Natalie Maines who is one-third of the Dixie Chicks (notice a theme?)
NOTE II: The links take you to the youtube versions! A good giggle for the weekend.
LISTEN UP… This week’s theme is inspired by Ben. He is competing in his first-ever cycle race this Saturday. The distance is 50 miles and he is ready! I will be return the favour of being an awesome support crew member, hopefully will get some great race snaps for next week.
Have a great weekend and enjoy this week’s mix- on Spotify.
LISTEN UP… This weekend I, along with my pal Reia, will be running the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Edinburgh. This is our second halfie together, you might recall the time we ran the one in Paris last year. I will only make two pre-excuses- Reia has tendonitis and I have not been running as much I should have been since I proudly ran my 80 miles during my trip.
Our goal- best my mother-in-law’s last half marathon time of 2:18. Can we do it? I am hoping so, but Sue is a serious athlete and a very regular runner with her club, Bushfield Joggers.
Enjoy this weekend’s mix! If you are on Spotify, listen here, if not, what is stopping you, it is easy- even I can do it.
LISTEN UP… One of my birthday resolutions was to listen to new (to me) and varied music from a wide-range of artists. I am only a few months behind schedule.
When I met Ben, he had such eclectic music tastes, ranging from Prince to Stevie Wonder with the Beastie Boys and Labi Siffre thrown in for added music snobbery! Me, on the other hand- Neil Diamond, Dixie Chicks with the occasional power ballad from Chicago or REO Speed Wagon thrown in to get me through my runs- I ran with a handheld C.D. player.
This brings me to my ambition to regularly provide this century’s version of the mix-tape to you with a theme and bursting with (mostly) new songs (again me-focused) with a few Buffy-classics tossed in for nostalgia.
On Spotify- listen up here!
Have a great weekend.
